Due to our age we have come to the very difficult decision that we must downsize and let a number of our beloved adult poodles go. For details please see the bottom of this page.
All our pet puppies are sold with AKC limited registration and spay/neuter contracts. They may be shown in all performance classes such as obedience, agility, rally and earn a CGC. They may not be shown in conformation classes since they cannot be spayed or neutered in those classes. A $300. deposit will reserve your puppy. Remainder due at time of receipt of pup.
prices for puppies range from $1,000 to $2,000
Shipping via airline when weather permits: Shipping fees will depend upon latest quotes from Delta airlines at time of shipping and include air fare, crate, vet check & interstate health papers.
We can also ship by a trustworthy ground service. Fees depend on distance. This usually takes a while to arrange as routes are not always available immediately.
All puppies being shipped must be paid in full before shipping.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Our puppies are de-wormed and are up to date on vaccinations according to their age when they leave here following the New vaccination protocol
We start them at weaning on 2 meals daily of a wide variety of foods including yogurt ,raw ground beef, heart & kidney ground pork, liver ground chicken, liver, heart and gizzards, green tripe, canned jack mackeral and free choice feeding of dry Innova Evo or Canidae no grain the same as the adults. At 6 to 7 weeks we add raw chicken necks to their diet.
They spend their first 2 weeks in our bedroom then come downstairs to a 5' x 9' x-pen fenced area in our dining room where they are in the center of all that goes on in our household. Here they get used to our other dogs, cats, family and visitors and are well socialized when ready to leave. In good weather they spend part of every day in the fresh air outdoors in their own special fenced play area. See live links at bottom of this page for information on feeding and supplements.
All our sires and dams are certified Optigen Genetically Normal/Clear
Significance for breeding: Genetically Normal/Clear dogs can be bred to any dog and will produce no pups affected with the prcd form of PRA.
See Information about DNA blood testing for PRCD the major form of PRA in
With careful testing and breeding we can produce all normal unaffected progeny now and all breeders can completely eliminate this genetic defect in two to three generations.
There are many things one can test for. Most tests are not definitive and only tell you if the dogs tested are normal or not at the time of testing. They do not tell you if they are genetic carriers or if the progeny of these healthy normal, tested dogs will have these problems. It will be wonderful when the day comes that there are DNA tests for all the problems such as epilepsy, diabetes, etc. Only then will we be able to breed them completely out of our beloved dogs.
One thing to remember for everyone is that no matter how much testing and researching you do there is no way to guarantee that every dog you breed will be healthy. Testing is one of many tools that help to give a breeder higher odds of producing healthy dogs, we are working with genetics and there are so many variables that perfection in any area is impossible. Even though much is "known" about genetics much much more is not and genes have the ability to mutate to make things even more difficult.
We do the best we can to provide you with the healthiest dogs possible, both mentally and physically.

In the US we have three sizes of poodles.
The toy which is under 10 inches at the withers
The miniature over 10 inches and under 15 inches
The standard which is over 15 inches.
We feel it is easier to explain the projected sizes of our puppies using the European size standard which has four sizes of poodle as follows:
Toy-Toypudel: Under 28cm (10.92")
Dwarf-Zwergpudel: 28cm to 35cm (10.93" to 13.78")
Miniature-Moyan-Kleinpudel: 35 cm to 45cm (13.79"to17.72")
Standard-Grosspudel: 45cm to 62cm (17.73" to 24.18")
We are specializing in the dwarf and miniature sizes. We also do not dock tails, but leave them natural as is required by many European countries & Australia.
After much deliberation, we have decided to stop docking tails. As of Jan 1st. 2003, all our puppies will have their tails natural, the way they were born. The way they were meant to be.
Many European countries and Australia now outlaw tail docking.
For people interested in showing their dogs internationally, the tails must remain natural.
In this country, tail docking is allowed. It is still preferred by the U.S. show community in spite of the fact that you take a 3 to 5 day old puppy, cut off the top part of his tail putting him under much stress at a time when he is needing all his strength to get a start in life.
Finally, a few U.S. breeders are leaving their dogs tails natural.

Interesting information about front dew claws
This is information discussing dew claws that I read on a genetics list. It is copied on this site with permission of the author, Liisa Sarakontu..
Front dew claws are not really dew claws.(genetic aberations or ativisms),
but functional if evolutionary reduced fingers for handling objects.
They are thumbs. Dogs can use them to grab things like bones to chew. A Karelian bear dog I used to know used them very effectively when he didn't want me to walk away from him (he was always leashed outside, owned by a neighbor when I was a kid), He really "hugged" one of my legs with both forelegs and the nails of his thumbs prevented me from leaving him especially during summer, when I was barefooted.
I have heard to say that foxes can use their thumb nails to help climbing a chicken wire fence, and Stacy Pober (I think) said that slow motion film shows how greyhound thumbs touch ground when a dog is running top speed and prevent the wrist to
twist too much.
So dog thumbs shouldn't be routinely amputated. Back dew claws are more or less unnecessary and they don't exist on any wild canid. They are often just partially attached to leg and so more prone to tearing.

It is time we took a stand against fads that are not good for our dogs, but are strictly
for cosmetic purposes or the convenience of people. Joy Cenicola.

We encourage every pet owner to do basic obedience training and if possible to continue with more, such as training and showing for
CGC, rally, obedience & agility titles, working therapy dogs, etc. This is useful and fun for both you and your dog. It will make them much better companions and strengthen the bond between you. There are links to information on these sports and more on LINKS OF INTEREST page.

JUST A PET
"We only want a pet" This phrase is heard so often. I think what most people do not understand is that "just a pet" has to be as close as possible to the written breed standard as the show dog. The most important thing that makes a good pet is over all good health. This includes mental health (good temperament and personality) as well as physical health. For good physical health a puppy needs a strong immune system. Proper structure and movement are also neccessary so the bones and joints do not develop problems later in life (such as hip dysplasia or loose patellas) .
"Just a pet" should be the dogs in a well bred healthy litter that may have minor faults in structure that are strictly of cosmetic value.
Perhaps a slightly rounder eye than desired in the breed ring, or a tail carried slightly lower or higher than perfect. It may be a personality conflict since sometimes the most perfectly structured and moving dog just does not have that moving out strut your stuff look at me aren't I beautiful attitude needed for the "show dog" to be truely competitive, yet is the ideal mellow pup to be the perfect family companion.
"Just a pet" should not be a dog of inferior breeding, poor conformation, poorly raised or of bad temperament, but should be as well bred, socialized, properly fed & carefully nurtured as the finest show dog to give you the best possible family companion. We at Casa La Strega do not breed dogs specifically to show, We breed beautiful healthy dogs for you to enjoy as family companions, obedience, rally & agility competitors and to work with as therapy dogs. We do the best we can to provide the healthiest dogs possible, both mentally and physically. for those of you who want "just a pet".

B-Naturals Newsletter – March 2009
Dogs and Protein
Lew Olson, PhD Natural Health
While I have already written on this topic in the past, I am revisiting the subject due to numerous questions on protein I have received in the last month. There seems to be a lot of misinformation on protein in the diet, so I will try and give an overview on protein in this newsletter to help answer some of your questions and concerns.
Protein Sources
Protein is found in most foods, including carbohydrates. But dogs are carnivores and the best source of protein for them is found in animal products. This would include meat (pork, beef, poultry, lamb, rabbit, fish, dairy and eggs, just to mention a few). Animal based proteins contain a complete amino acid profile needed by carnivores. Plant based proteins are missing important amino acids, including taurine and carnitine. Both of these are important for heart and organ health. Heat also affects the integrity of these amino acids, so they can also be lacking in a processed diet (commercial dog food) or heavily cooked home diets. Do remember to not overcook the meats in homemade diets and do try to add fresh animal protein to dry dog food diets.
Too Much Protein?
The anatomy and digestive process of dogs are designed to most easily digest animal fat and protein. Dogs perform best on animal based products. Studies have shown you cannot feed a dog too much protein. (For more information about this, you can review the past newsletter on protein at http://www.b-naturals.com/newsletter/protein/.) I have had questions from people with concerns that protein can cause kidney problems. Some of this confusion results from the idea that dogs with renal issues need a low protein diet. This is not correct. Dogs in chronic renal failure will have some comfort with less *phosphorus* in the diet. It is possible to feed a low phosphorus diet, but still have a good amount of high quality protein. Protein is necessary for healthy kidneys. But feeding a high protein diet will not cause renal problems. For more information on this, refer to:
http://www.b-naturals.com/newsletter/kidney-diet/
http://www.dogaware.com/kidney.html
Also remember, senior dogs need *more* protein than adults. As our dogs age, proteins help with organ function, coat, skin, and immunity. Puppies also require high protein for good growth and maturity. Protein does not cause panosteitis or other growth problems. Read more:
http://www.b-naturals.com/newsletter/feeding-puppies-seniors/
Which Proteins are Good to Feed?
Most animal based proteins are good for dogs. This would include beef, pork, poultry, fish, dairy and eggs. It also includes a small percentage of organ meat, such as kidney and liver. I have seen recipes that included soy products such as tofu, but I would not recommend this. Soy products block the uptake of calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc and iodine. And soy is plant based, so it does not contain the full complement of amino acids needed for good health for dogs.
If you are feeding a dry dog food, it is easy to add quality protein to kibble. You can add up to 50% in animal based proteins and fats. For recipe suggestions:
http://www.b-naturals.com/newsletter/mixing-fresh-food-with-kibble/
Home cooking is also an option. In this manner, you can control the ingredients of your dog’s diet, which can be helpful in cases of allergies, illness or managing weight. For instructions and recipes:
http://www.b-naturals.com/newsletter/cooked-diet/
Feeding a raw diet is also an option and raw meat diets can be simpler to make as you don’t have to deal with the hassle of cooking. Here are some guidelines and recipe suggestions:
http://www.b-naturals.com/newsletter/raw-diet/
As you can see, there is no one way to feed your dog. There are many options available, and an important element is to insure your dog is getting high quality, easily digested animal based proteins. This can be done with a commercial diet, home cooked diet or feeding a raw diet. These methods can be combined to fit your time frame and lifestyle, and the improvement in your dog’s diet will be seen quickly through your dog’s energy level, coat and skin, cleaner teeth and their joy and anticipation of eating foods that are tasty and nutritious.

BREEDERS POEM
I love my little puppy; she makes my house a home.
She is my very sweetest little friend; I never feel alone.
She makes me smile; She makes me laugh; She fills my heart with love . . .
Did some person breed her, or did she fall from above?
I've never been a breeder, never seen life through their eyes;
I hold my little puppy and just sit and criticize.
I've never known their anguish; I've never felt their pain,
the caring of their charges, through snow or wind or rain.
I've never waited the whole night through for babies to be born,
The stress and trepidation when they're still not there by morn.
The weight of responsibility for this body in my hands,
This darling little baby, who weighs but 60 grams.
Should you do that instead of this . . . or maybe that was wrong?
Alone you fight and hope, one day, he'll grow up proud and strong.
You pray he'll live to bring great joy to someone else 's home.
You know it's all just up to you; you'll fight this fight alone.
Formula, bottles, heating pads, you've got to get this right,
two-hour feedings for this tiny guy, throughout the day and night.
Within your heart you dread that you will surely lose this fight,
To save this little baby, but God willing . . . you just MIGHT.
Day one; he's in there fighting; you say a silent prayer.
Day two & three, he's doing well, with lots of love and care.
Day four & five . . . he's still alive; your hopes soar to the heavens.
Day six he slips away again, dies in your hands, day seven.
You take this little angel, and bury him alone.
With aching heart and burning tears, and an exhausted groan,
You ask yourself, "Why do this? . . . Why suffer through this pain?"
Yet watch the joy your puppies bring, and everything's explained.
So, when you think of breeders and label them with "Greed,"
Think of all that they endure to fill another's need.
For when you buy your puppy, with your precious dollars part,
You only pay with money . . . while they pay with their heart.
